Google is becoming a registrar?! |
Yeah I heard about this a while back. Looking at that article it was dated back in February. I think more than re-selling registrations, they are using the role as a registrar to mine the data available as a registrar. What they might be using that information for is anyone's guess. However, they do love data, and becoming a registrar allows them access to more of it. All this time later, it does not look like they have done anything publically with it. However, since Google owns a vast number of domain names, it probably makes sense just from that perspective to become a registrar. |
Google IS an ICANN-accredited registrar, but they do not open registrations to the public. And that news article is incorrect - they are NOT developing a browser and have ANNOUNCED that they are not... http://googleplans.blogspot.com |
I've never heard of this and I know its going to be interesting. I wonder how much they are going to charge for thier domains and if they are going to offer services like hosting with them as well. |
I was listening to the radio a couple of weeks ago and heard about this AGAIN... Learned something that I don't know if it is true or not. They plan to sell domains and to provide hosting with them. They havn't made a date for this but they say it's on their minds. They ALSO said that they were going to make a browser and that it was coming out in 07-08... This was on one of those talk show like things... Most of the time they are right and actually talk to people about this... Maybe it is true and maybe it isn't. :| Just thought I would share what I HEARD on the RADIO. |
lol...this can't be false if it's on the radio.. |
You have to remember that Google operates by the famous 70-20-10 rule. 70 percent core project (search), 20 percent for supporting projects and 10 percent to pretty much anything goes. This means that Google engineers sometimes come up with some wild ideas, many of them don't even get to beta. That said, registrar would fit Google rather well. |
google has proven themselves with nearly everything they ever do. Their stock proves that... As much as they are gaining a monolpoly very slowly as MS did, they have put in the time and work, so if they can make it work, i would wish them luck :) |
I agree with William; still, I do not consider something like this a wrong thing for people selling hosting or offering domain registration like me. There are already several huge companies offering this and the market has not be damaged. |
yeah...i guess it's just part of making business...if others can do this i guess google can do it too... |
