XP on Vista PC

Hi

I have a Dell Dimension 9200 with Vista. I have the hard drive from my old XP PC, which I use as a back up device, this is in USB casing. On the XP hard drive there programs that are not compatible with Vista. How can I boot up my PC from the external XP USB hard drive.
