Unhappy Vista problem

new day....new problems.
My church just purchased a new HP laptop to run our songshow and presentations at church. It has an Intel dual-core processor and 2 gig ram, with Vista Ultimate.
After bumbling around trying to figure out using Vista - I had the same problem come up twice - and I've only had the computer a few days!
When I am finished using the computer - I go to the Start button, find the "shut down' button and click it. And nothing happens. The computer sits there merrily NOT shutting down. I gave it a good 15 minutes to do so....but nada. I cannot, however, go back and try again, for the computer is obviously busy doing I know not what. I have to manually force it off.

Could anyone let me know why this might be happening?

Also....it might be just me, but the computer seems to be very sluggish and slow.
Is this normal? How can I improve the speed?

Thanks for any help you can provide...

Trish

Hello Trish, I think the shut down button you are referring to is actually a sleep button which puts the PC into a low power state, firstly check to see of you have a similar hotkey button on your laptop and see if that works.

Default This just keeps getting worse...

Hey Martin,
Feel like I know you! Thanks for jumping in on this.

What I did was go to the Start button - then way over to the right you have a choice of buttons - and the "sleep thing" is one of them. But the one I clicked was clearly marked "Shut down" - and that is what I expected it to do.

This morning I am again trying to use this laptop - and when looking at a diagnostic - it is telling me that 88% of resources are being used, and that the machine does not have enough memory to run the system.

I have already turned off all those fancy "looks-only" things - in favor of having the machine run faster - and I have not installed anything on it except the Easy Worship program - which of course doesn't run, even though it is supposed to. (but that's another story).
So.....how do I find out what on earth is using up all the system resources? At this point, I'm thinking we just need to return the machine and go get a Dell, where you can still get it with XP.
I don't mind working to get things going - but when it's not right from the get-go - that is pretty discouraging.

Going to a corner now and tear out my hair....
awaiting a glimmer of hope from you.....please?

Trish

Ok....a littel more info.
I did find out that one cannot just "mouse-over" the "sleep" option to get to the "shut-down" button, or it goes to sleep anyway. If you make the mouse not go that way and reach the 'shut-down' button without doing that - it does shut down correctly. Lesson learned.

Seems also that it was the software that came with the mobile mouse that was causing the computer to use 88% (or more) of its resources. Have no idea why.
Uninstalled the "mouse suite" and the CPU usage dropped like a stone.

So.....now I am sorta back to square one. Just wanted to bring you up to date...

Thanks again!
Trish

Hello, if you still want to use the mobile mouse check with the manufacturers to see if it is either compatible with vista or has any driver updates for vista.

Alternatively, find one that works with Vista, a lot of people who have purchased vista have had to either wait for the manufacturers of their hardware to update the driver, or purchase new hardware. I had to wait for a driver for my wireless adapter from belkin.

Regards

Martin
