Default USB 2.0 Question

I am running windows XP SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 9200.

My USB 2.0 drives will charge my mp3 player, but they will not recognize any of my many peripherals.

I thought this was a problem with my mp3 player but it, and my external hard drives work fine on other computers.

Is the fact that my usb drive charges my mp3 player a glimmer of hope that my drive may somehow be configured properly, or is it still very likely that all 4 of my USB drives fried at once?

I would hate to invest another night of research if my USB drives are just defective.

What type of device are you having trouble with. Thumb drive (flash memory type) or portable hard drive?
Also does it recognize your MP3 player or only charge it?
Will a USB mouse work on the port?

My mp3 player charges but is not recognized.

These devices will not be recognized but they used to be before this issue came up:

2 external hard drives (usb 2.0)
Scanner
USB Mouse
USB Keyboard

You might need to invest in a powered USB hub, as you may not have adequate power going to the usb ports...

USB Hubs

Make sure you have the latest updates from Microsoft. There have been some isuues with this.
Also make sure you have the latest system board drivers for your Dell Inspiron 9200 from the delll website.
If your Operating System is up to date then read the following and take the recommended action if any apply.
