Sound not working on my sony vaio

My sound is not working on my laptop. I have checked the mute button and checked the sound drivers. The only sound I have is when I start up the computer and it does make the windows start up sound. Any ideas on what else I can check?

install a audio/video codec pack.

K-lite is one of the better free ones. Use Google to find some more.
