If your operating system is Windows XP, you can use XP Error-Checking tool.
Quote:
1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that you want to check.
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now.
4. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.
5. Click Start.
Or you can use some of these freeware utilities
1. Fresh Diagnose
2. PC Diagnose
3. Emsa-DiskCheck

Are you getting any error messages, OR your hard disk is making any strange noise?

Try some of the freeware utilities mentioned above to check your hard disk.

Also make sure you backup all your important data.
