Any mouse experts out there?

My MS optical wheel mouse has developed the shakes when I go to open a file and scan the right click menu commands...it sort of stutters, shakes and stalls momentarily.

But when I open anything else it works fine.

No other anomalies.

I have not been successful in finding any related articles on the net.

Downloaded and installed a new updated driver and problem appears to be resolved.

It's most probably the Pebkac factor...

Ah, a good one...but alas if you have nothing worthwhile to contribute, say nothing... Now, I wonder where I read that?

After much google searching, and being sent into some **** sites, I decided to test the honesty of the suggestion...

I should have known that "trolls" lurk in every corner...so much for expertise...

Back to the search for a solution! No time to dawdle or be a foil for someone elses issues...

1) Most creeping or jerky mouse movements are caused by a piece of lint or hair stuck between the optical lens and the mirror. Make sure it is cleaned by blowing forced CANNED air into the opening where the light shines from. Do not use tweezers or swabs as the mirror is easily scratched.

2) Some optical mice have a built in power down application that is built into the mouse chip. This power down option sticks or corrupts itself so that it is alternating at a very high speed, (too fast for the human eye) this powering up and powering down creates a creaping pointer. On difference surfaces it has different effects...some movements are more pronounced than others.

Reseting the driver or various mouse options will sometimes perform a temporary fix, but sooner or later..once it begins it will continue to happen as it is a faulty chipset in the mouse.

control panel > mouse > 'Pointer Options' tab......
in motion box ;either select or deselect the "Enhanced pointer precision box.... Just changing this control option will reset the propper mouse reading functions. and stop the creeping. If not then change the drivers out..Still no luck...buy a new mouse!

Thank you for your kind response... My reported solution did not last long...about 10 minutes...I am still scouring the net for a resolution...unfortunately...bummer. I've reinstalled the driver, done an SFC...defragged, etc., etc.. Downloaded and installed an updated driver...no change. Returned to original driver...no change. It acts like a CPU drain, as if another prog is fighting for the same resources, and only in the right pane, and only upon trying to open a folder with the right button, and throughout the accompanying menu...it stutters and shakes all over the place until I can get to my command...up to and from that menu on, it works fine. I even replaced the mouse! She no work

Edit: o.k., after much consternation, I figured out that it was a conflict between progs controlling the right pane. So, what did I have on board doing that...I installed "SHELL Extension VIEWER" to see if I could get a handle on just what was in the Shell folder...followed the instructions but that only proved that nothing logical in the shell was affecting the mouse. I continued on with the feeling that it was a conflict problem...more than one prog was fighting to do the same operation. O.k., what progs did I have that were set up to mimic each other, unknowingly...?

The net seemed to hint at it being a conflict, so I continued with that premis. I uninstalled some programs in order to determine which one was the culprit: Get Data's "Explorer View," ATI's latest Catalyst Control Centre [graphics], Intell Wheel Mouse driver, and "Universal Viewer." I think Explorer View and Universal Viewer were the baddies

The mouse is now flying around like a homesick bat...I think I can safely say the issue is closed, but, I am not holding my breath.

RE-EDIT 11/09/2008...NO RESOLUTION...still searching...there appears to be as many solutions as there are problems...no consistency...the latest I've tried...deals with speed, but most refs refer to a graphics problem...so, here is a start...it did not work for me.

Problem: open a folder
1. files in a sequence
2. right-click on one
3. menu pops up
4. any attempt to move mouse through the menu results in chaotic movement
5. work cursor to the empty pane field...wait until it stops to get out of command
6. re-attempt, and it now works...
7. appears to affect files, not folders or shortcut links...

1. Download the Remove_Intel_Menu.reg file to a temporary folder.

Revisiting the issue: whatever I did toward the end, must have resolved the matter. I have had no more problem with the mouse.
