Looks like your resolution is set too high, try right clicking on the desktop and look for either resolution or a properties menu (not sure what version of Ubuntu you're running). If you can't find it that way, you can always find the control panel in your "start" menu.
Simply find the resolution or display settings and make it larger. My guess is you're currently set at about 800x600 or so, which is pretty large for today's monitors.
If you have any further issues, feel free to post again, it is possible you will need a video driver update before the resolution change is possible.

The limited availability of resolutions is due to missing video card drivers. Linux is only packaged with free software and thus does not usually include drivers for your specific video card. If you list your video card make and number, I'm sure we could find you one.

Personally I am a fan of Linux Mint for beginners. It is built on top of Ubuntu and includes device driver locators, making it easy to find all the drivers you need.

Windows and Linux are nothing alike. Installing drivers in Linux can be quite different. Also you cannot use Windows drivers in Linux, you need to find Linux versions of those drivers if you need the device support.

Linux is very hands on and requires more work to customize than Windows. If you want an OS that is as easy as Windows, Linux would not be the obvious choice.

The Linux Mint website is filled with information on it. I posted the link above, feel free to browse the site and see if it is right for you.

You could have read the release notes for fedora 10...

It very simply specifies:
Minimum RAM for text-mode: 128MB
Minimum RAM for graphical: 192MB

Torrents:linux torrent client - Google Search
Music:linux music player - Google Search
Other:Google
