Laptop Presario X1000 dead dead dead!

This is my first post and first time in this forum, it looks to be very informative, now on to the problem.
Presario X1000 laptop crashed, I checked the hard drive and it is completely fried, I replaced the hard drive, laptop can see it I then purchased the recovery disks from Compaq/hp, and the laptop will not boot into the CD. I have gone into the BIOS checked all the settings for boot sequence, still will not boot off the cd. Has anyone had this issue before, Is the CD drive toast as well.
I have been trying to make the hard drive bootable, I have a desktop with a SATA/IDE USB adaptor and can format the new laptop hard drive on my desktop, I can even copy the new XP recovery discs to the hard drive, I then get an error messg when I boot up "BOOTMGR is missing"
Thanks for your help in advance

Which OS are you trying to install?
It could be your CD Drive, does your bios detect your new hard drive and the CD drive?

If you are trying to install XP and the hard drive is detected, you may want to consider this method:

Hi thanks for the response, the OS is XP home with SP2, the BIOS does see the hdd and optical drive, and gives me a choice of boot options within the BIOS, but once the pc boots up it does not see or give me the option of booting either drive. I did go to the link but I believe he is using an older desktop to install DOS on the Laptop HD. I have a newer PC with SATA drives. I do have a usb to hdd converter and am able to see it on my regular PC. I would like to be able to make the new Laptop drive bootable by utilizing my pc.
