Default Nice little defragger...

1. Stumbled upon "Piriform Defraggler" [ Defraggler - Defragment your files! ] is a nice little, simple to use, free, defragger which, if you recall earlier versions of Windows Defrag.exe... i.e. W95-W98SE [?] it's a bit nostalgic. I am always mesmerized by the wee boxes flitting about... I miss that in the XP defrag.exe Its produced by the makers of Crap Cleaner. The only drawback I have found so far, is that there is no legend for the colour codes...i.e. what each colour represents as the program shifts the fragments about. My memory is not what it used to be, so I only vaguely recall some of them.

Maybe someone who still has a useful copy of the old defrag.exe could note the colours here, and what they signify. This may be of some help... jkOnTheRun:Freeware of the Moment: Auslogics Disk Defrag

2. Auslogic also has some nice, freeware for defragging...I do not like it better... DirFile: Freeware Software Downloads but it does give a colour code, and it removes junk files prior to the defragging.

I think I'd run both in this 1, 2 sequence.

Default re: Diskeeper

Agreed...one of the best... although I did have trouble with earlier versions of "Diskeeper Lite"...but then, that's just one user and one computer with a quirky nature and a head of its own.

Back from the jungle: o.k., I tried the new Diskeeper Premier Pro...wow what a GUI...fiddled with all the settings...

From a non-techincal point of view, this program would be best left to the techies. Us common folk might get lost in the displays of options...I found it difficult to be able to tell what was enabled and when, and what wasn't. Trolls are like that I had run both of the much, much simpler appearing progs previously noted... and then ran Diskeeper to see if any changes were made. Not one... In fact, it may have been because it was waiting for idle time to respond. How it defines "idle time" is not obviously made known. That would give me to wonder, just when it would kick in...if it is automatic real time, then when does the real time actually occur? Personally, I would prefer, if it defined "real time" as our anti-virus programs do. But, that's just me.

I agree that automatic defragmentation would be beneficial in a commercial, network, or high volume setting; but I wonder if it would be suitable for the ordinary "Joe..." on a day to day basis, with the opposite set of circumstances.

I uninstalled it, and put it back on the shelf At least, I tried it.

Default Think positive... ;)

Do I sense a bit of hostility in your note? Pity, you could be offering up so much more. This site is for technical questions and answers. It is not your forum to berate sincere commentary.

"Only a complete moron will have difficulty with the GUI. Oh wait you are..."

As you project the attitude of a 12 year old... I shall enlighten you on some facts...There are a lot, and I mean a lot, of seniors operating computers who could care less about technology, from a nuts and bolts perspective. Just give me the computer and make it work for the LIMITED use which I am going to put it. You are an anachronism, my friend, in their minds...out of time and out of place. Second, there are also quite a few, youngsters who are at the same stage of computer usage.

You scare them both. Are you stable enough to be on line at all? ...that is my only bit of concern with your responses.

As an egomaniac, what's it like to walk on water? Be more professional in your undertakings and comments. Just because you may think that you KNOW more than your average Joe, and appear to head-up a few fora at this site ...only reflects the possibility that among us poor sots, you are the only one able to do so. It is a gift...why abuse it? Why demean others? Why act like a smart aleck? Try being a gentle soul for a change.

TTFN...The Moronic Troll
