want to low level format an ibm thinkpad i have obtained for my grandson and then install win xp using his mothers xp disc - need to log in directly with dos - how do i do it - make a usb a boot disc with command.com onit or make a bootable cd ?

Is there any special reason that you need low level format ?

I agree with Status1. If you do not need a low level format then don't do it...If you must then find out the harddrive manufacturer and visit their site to get their own utility and use it to boot to to repair or fix the drive as well. No need for dos as the utility is bootable.

thanks for the response - low level format i thought would be best so he starts off with a completely clean hd - ie back to factory condition - i tried a low level system from maxtor but it said i have to boot the pc into dos but i could only access dos from within windows and the thinkpad only has a cd or usb drive - how do i boot it into dos and completely bypass windows ?

The utility from Maxtor is installed as a windows application...Download the same thing as a bootable CD and boot to it and ignore the open in windows notice.

Harddrives are not that hard to remove from a laptop. Usually remove the cover plate on the bottom side and remove 1 or 2 small screws and it slides right out.
Just make sure that the battery is removed first and is unplugged from any charger. Get the manufacturer and model and just slide it back in.
