I need a program for writing the boot sector Hello, i'm needing a program for writing the boot sector of a FAT32 partition because i have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed in drive D but some games and programs doens't work on that system so i want Windows 98 installed in the C partition but the WinXP boot sector will be replaced with the MS-DOS boot sector if i install the system in the drive C (i don't want to create a third partition, Partition Magic have made a mess with my NTFS partition when i have taken disk space for the other partition and it was very difficult to repair the damage). Thats why i'm needing a program like that, when the Windows 98 install program re-writes the WinXP boot sector i create a new one after the system is installed. I have searched in google but nothing about such program. Please help! |
The easiest way to dual boot is to use a third party boot manager. GAG is a free boot manager that will allow you to use 9 different operating systems installed.....GAG installs in the 8MB lead in on any hard drive and then protects the MBR of each operating system installed on the computer so that each and every operating system full integrity remains intact...unlike microsoft's boot manager that overrides all previous MBR. There is no need to have to overwrite the boot sector. GAG, the Graphical Boot Manager |
Or install on your C-drive, formatted as FAT32, Win 98, and after that install WinXP, and choose manual installation. Choose partition D: as target. Then automatically your boot track has the two operating systems configured. |
I don't want to reinstall WinXP, i saw somewhere a prog for writing boot sectors only for floppys and CDs but not for HD, thats why i'm searching a program that creates a boot sector on a HD |
once you have installed win98, simply boot with the XP disc and use the command line recovery and type the commands: fixmbr fixboot these will replace the MBR (master boot record) with the XP boot loader which will allow for dual booting 98 and XP. |
