I need to know what to do to completely erase my hard drive Please let me know a good way to swipe my hard drive clean. Is there a software I can use, or another method? Thanks for your help. |
You should be looking for something along the lines of Active@Kill Disk, which is a low-level hard drive format and erasing tool. These tools not only delete data, but they also run sequences of random bits across the entire drive in several layers, ensuring that the original data is all but impossible to recover. If you need to be sure the data is gone for good, look for an application which conforms to the US Department of Defence's data clearance standard. Another good method is to melt or dissolve your hard drive, though that is a little less practical and may make it difficult for you to continue to use the drive. Does a good job of getting rid of data, though. |
Download DOS 7 boot disk and boot from it and run FDISK and delete the partition simple as that |
Hello, sounds simple WiredUp but I've heard that you may need to format the disk several times over ( about 15-16 times ). Which is why I think the Active@KillDisk Cobalt mentioned sounds like it's worth a try. Regards Martin |
That's correct - I've managed to recover one or two partitions I thought I had nuked using FDisk, which just goes to show that formatting doesn't guarantee a completely blank disk. Doing it several times will decrease the chances of data ever being recovered, but do you really want to sit and reformat your drive 10, 20, 30 times? Didn't think so :icon_wink: |
