A few things come to mind
When a connection is lost it is usually caused by a bad NIC (network interface
card)...either the drivers are in need of updating or the configuration has been mismatched or the hardware itself has just worn out.
You didn't mention as to how you were connecting to this remote connection (in the same place) wirelessly? or hardwired? using a router/switch ?
This would be need to know information because the recieve > transmit signal strength would be something to look at and is controlled by software that is installed along with the drivers of some wireless installations.
There is also the issue of spyware/malware and viruses hiding on the computer. Make sure that you have ran all your updated protection software.
Another thing would be programs that are self starting and running in the background. Sometimes an update will give them priority and cause the weaker service (connection) to be terminated.
start > R.clk "My Computer > properties > hardware tab > device manager and expand the network adapter and see if there is any issues with it...a yellow or red "! or ?" mark will be present.
Even if there is not any shown issues then you need to visit your computer manufacturer's site and look under "support > downloads/drivers > your model of computer > drivers > network drivers and look for the network adapter driver file.
download the driver to your desktop. And any extra software that may be available as well. close out all open windows and double click the driver icon and it will auto update the files...
