error code 80070005 Vista update Hi there, since some weeks now I suddenly get the error code 80070005 when updating Vista Home premium with the description 'product support' and resulting in not being able to update. Searched the internet but could not find a solution. Who has some ideas in coping this problem. Thanks in advance! |

I found this on the net: this error is caused by the administrator account being disabled causing a access denied error meaning system wide changes cannot be performed as you will have insuficient rights to perform these changes even if your account is a administrator as its not the account used to perform the install of windows.you will be unable to perform updates from windows usually optional updates mainly hardware based updates.this is the cure are you ready????? open the program lusrmgr (local users and groups manager double click users right click administrator then properties then enable then close then log off switch users to admin then update |
Thanks a lot for yr quick reply. To be honest with you, I found this message too, but the forum forgets to say this lusmngr cannot be opened through Vista Home Premium: you need a higher version. Some other forum says you simply have to make a new account as admin, but that ons doesn't work either. Some other stipulate it had to with MSN, but that does not seem to be installed on my PC. We use life. One suggestion would probably work: reinstall Windows from scrap on... Not my piece of cake! In other words, I am still puzzled and looking for a solution. |
Did you try to restore to a point that it was working using Vista System Restore? If your PC is mostly working, you can follow this guide. Otherwise, boot with a Vista disc and it will find you already have a OS and ask if you want to restore. Windows Vista System Restore Guide |
solved the problem on the forum of Vistaheads.com: 1. Disable Windows Update a. Click on start b. Click on all programs c. Click on accessories d. Click on Run e. Type services.msc and press ok f. Right click on "Windows Update" g. Click on stop (Windows Update is now disabled) 2. Rename Software Distribution folder a. Navigate to: C:/Windows/ b. Find the folder named: “SoftwareDistribution” c. Rename that folder to something like “SoftwareDistribution.old” d. Create a new folder called “SoftwareDistribution” 3. Enable Windows Update a. Click on start b. Click on all programs c. Click on accessories d. Click on Run e. Type services.msc and press ok f. Right click on windows update g. Click on start If you are unable to find Software Distribution Folder, follow these steps before #2 above. 1. From the explorer window press the Alt key to view the file menu. 2. Click Tools 3. Select Folder Options 4. Select the View tab 5. Select “Show hidden files and folders” 6. Remove the selection from “Hide protected operating system files” 7. Click OK Restart your PC and you should be good to go! |
Thanks for reporting the solution! |
That's a bit the problem, system restore doesn't work either. I ran sfc /scannow. It seems it starts to work again: after closing the PC on start-up suddenly the restorepoint was still present. No idea what went wrong on my PC, seems to be serious though. See my other reaction on this thread, I seem to have solved the problem of updating. |
