Today, Google has created add-ons that allow their users to receive Gmail and Gchat notifications on their desktops. Google Chrome’s notifications are simple, easy to read, and does a great job in keeping an eye on what’s happening inside Gmail without having to frequently check it using your browser. The steps below will walk you through configuring them for your system. How to turn on Desktop Notifications
Open your Google Chrome browser and click on the wrench located in the upper right corner and go to Options > Under the Hood > Content settings. On the Content menu, go to notifications. Check the box that says “Ask me when a site wants to show desktop notifications.” Exit from the options menu and go back to the main window in Chrome. Enable Notifications within Gmail
Login to your Gmail account and go to Settings > General. Scroll down to locate the Desktop notifications sub-section. From there, click on the link that says “Click here to enable desktop notifications…” As you click on it, you will notice a blue bar at the top of your browser asking if you want to allow mail.google.com to show desktop notifications. Choose Allow and Save Changes. Create a test mail to check if it works for you.
