Default Audacity basic questions

An Audacity neophyte here. I opened an MP3 file in Audacity (on my iMac). It plays, no problem. I want to copy a portion of the file out as a separate file to be able to burn it to a CD or bring into iTunes as an independent tune.

The commands under Edit that seem like they are appropriate to do that are "greyed out". What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

First, make sure you're running the latest version of Audacity—1.3.12 (beta). The beta is a lot nicer than the "stable" 1.2, but the beta is still stable (in fact, more so!).

You have selected your audio first, right? There are two ways you could do this. Either select want you want to remove and press Delete, or select what you want to keep and press Cmd-T (Trim).
