i have pentium 4, 2.8ghz , windowsxp , 512 mb ram pc when istarted mine it get's power off and when windows logged in (when welcome screen appears) this error repeated some times and now it not evenstarting also when ipressed the power supply button the red light and floppy's light come for a milli second and off please help me i'am now using my old one

Hello Sudheer, it sounds like you may have a problem with your power supply.

One of the simplest ways to check is to disconnect the power from all of you drives except the HDD and then boot up your PC.
Sometimes your PSU ( power supply unit) may have a fault and it can't supply enough power to all of your drives and as it starts to attempt to power all your devices, it simply gets drained and the computer no longer has the power to run, resulting in a shut down.

You can also check the power ratings labeled onto the side of your PSU, and you might be able to use the one out of your old PC.

However if you know how to safely use a voltmeter to test the voltages on the PSU leads this will help. (Do not attempt this if you don't know how!)

Yeah definitely something to do with the power. Its either the power supply unit like martin said or it is probably the power supplied to your house that keeps fluctuating. I'm guessing (by your username) that you are probably from India.. or a country where the power tends to fluctuate quite a bit. Thus causing the computer to shut down (well pretty much turn off abruptly). If that's the case then you might want to look into getting something like a UPS in order to prevent your computer from automatically turning off. Or it could be that the OS on your computer isn't installed properly (since you mention that the computer does boot).

Oh and the on and the floppy lights coming on for a second and then turning off is common, so that's nothing you have to worry about.

There is also a small possibility it could be motherboard related. Unfortunately, this is much harder and more expensive to test than a power supply problem so that would probably be your first port of call.

The only thing that concerns me with the power fluctuation argument is that your old PC works fine (to the best of my knowledge) - In general, power supplies have become more tolerant to power spikes and fluctuations. A faulty supply may be more susceptible to changes in voltage though generally with these things, they either work or they don't - There isn't much in between.

If you open your case, are there any lights on your motherboard? Most have at least one to indicate whether there is power getting to the motherboard - If so, then I'm afraid it may be more serious than a faulty PSU.

Let me know what you find - Basically, I want to know if there are any signs of life - Lights, fans spinning up, anything. If not then it's almost certainly the PSU, if there is, then you could be looking at the motherboard as the culprit.
