Default Question about laptop router PC cards

I have an old Dell Latitude, 4 GB hard drive or something like that, 64 MB ram. I was thinking about buying a PC card adapter so I could go online via my Lynksis router, to do simple things like AIM and email. The card costs around 50 dollars so I was wondering if any of you think that would be worth it, or if I should just invest that money into buying a better laptop.
