trouble dell latitude csx cant detect the external cd drive

I came across this great site looking for advice about my dell latitude csx and found Williams Wilson article, (Installing windows xp without floppy or cd drives) excellent,But before I go down this route can anyone tell me how I can get my laptop to recognize the external cd drive which attaches to the right side of the laptop I think it is known as a modular bay? I need to do this from the start so i can reinstall the OS the bios cant detect the cd drive or modular bay ???
