as far as noise, if you are comfortable, start the computer with the side panel off and try to determine the location of the noise. It can be as simple as a loose screw or struggling fan which needs to be replaced. (it cannot be assumed by any means that it is the hard drive, they often make more noise as they get older, but it is a recognizable spinning sound, and cannot be fixed through bios, so disregard that suggestion, there are many monitoring tools available to check the speed of drives, etc from within windows itself)
what do you mean synvol32 keeps disappearing? from your computer, from the system tray? or maybe it just isn't being loaded on startup?
XP has 2 versions: home and professional, if the other computer has a different version you cannot install additional components off the other install cd.
