There are different classes of routers: A,B,and G currently (though faster are available at great expense) The only ones you need to be concerned with are the B and G types. B allows for a max throughput of 11mbps, while G allows 54mbps. So the 'G' is indeed faster, or rather it allows a greater pipeline.
