if you just want files take the HD out of the old computer and add it as a secondary drive to another computer. Then as admin you can set permissions on the drive to assume ownership of files. Then just grab your folders and files that you need and move to the newer HD. Done. No need to get a password or have that machine boot up. Very simple.
