iTunes and Dell running Vista

Hi - I am finding it impossible to run iTunes on my Dell under Vista - I have uninstalled, re-intalled, flushed the DNS...all that happens is that iTunes starts up - refuses to recognise an internet connection and hangs the machine...help! Any ideas?
